On the Boardwalk

"Damn, it's 3:35," Jessica began. "We have to pay for parking. Do you want to wait?"

"No, it's fine," I responded as I waved a hand at her and fished five dollars out of my bag. Yesterday, after the catastrophic rain storm we had last week, Jessica and I both wanted to take a nice walk on the Jone's Beach boardwalk since it was sunny. I was glad to be catching up with Jessica, since I haven't seen her in a few weeks.

She pulled up to the booth and paid the attendant. They charged for parking until 4, but it seemed silly to pull over and wait so we could each save five dollars. We parked and began our leisurely walk. "So, how're things with Justin?" Jessica asked. "Still tense?"

I let out a soft sigh. I had texted Jessica after my weekend away in Atlantic City and gave her the low down on everything that happened. I had also texted her last week to get her opinion about some feelings I had about Justin. I couldn't shake the feeling that he was slightly avoiding me. We didn't make plans at all during the week and when the weekend came, we just grabbed a quick dinner and movie on Saturday night. I didn't broach the subject of Alan and Jackie at all during dinner. We filled our time talking about work and I talked a little about preparing for my Fall semester.

The car ride home from Atlantic City was relatively uneventful. Jackie was quiet, visibly suffering from her hangover, and the guys discussed football for a little. I kind of wanted to hang out with Justin before heading home, but since he didn't bring it up at all, I didn't either. I was pretty tired anyway and figured we'd see each other within a few days.

"Things aren't exactly tense," I replied. "I just can't shake the feeling that he's like, annoyed with me. Maybe it's all in my head."

"Maybe, but you need to be prepared for if it's not."

I shrugged. I knew Justin was in a tough spot but he didn't seem mad at me when I told him what I saw. He seemed frustrated, but only at the situation, not me. "We're getting dinner Wednesday night and I figured I'd ask about Alan and Jackie then. Enough time has passed."

"I honestly can't believe he hasn't texted you about it," Jessica said shaking her head. "I'm sorry, but if he didn't tell her that weekend, I would've Facebook messaged her."

"I don't feel like it's my place," I quickly replied. "Besides, what if she doesn't believe me? This gives Alan the opportunity to come clean, as if it was his idea."

"But it wasn't!" Jessica objected. "Don't you see that this is giving him an easy out?"

Jessica had expressed this view to me when I first told her about the weekend, but I told her this was a fitting compromise I made with myself. Yes, it would seem like Alan was volunteering this information, instead of pretty much being forced to tell her, but the bottom line was that Jackie would find out. "Jess, the thing is, I actually want them to work this out. I don't want them to break up, but -"

"But you're implanting a problem into their relationship," Jessica interrupted.

"No, I'm not," I snapped back at her. I understood she was just trying to make her point, but I was beginning to get annoyed. "I'm not the one who cheated. I didn't do this. Alan did. I thought you said I did the right thing?"

"You did, you did," she insisted with apologetic eyes. "I just didn't realize you were doing this with the hope and expectation that they'd stay together."

"I know it's going to be difficult but if the tables were turned, I'd want to know the truth. I mean, if it was a one time thing, I actually think I'd try to work through it if my boyfriend had the guts to confess."

Jessica quietly nodded. "You should've snagged a picture," she finally said.

"I know," I replied with a frustrated huff. "It took me five, maybe ten minutes to find Justin. How was I supposed to know they'd ditch those girls that fast?"

"Hind sight's twenty-twenty," Jessica said in a matter-of-fact tone. "I just hope this doesn't come back to bite you."

I waved a hand at her. "I doubt it. Think about it. Alan should be volunteering this information. If he says I saw him, Jackie will realize he was just caught. He has to be smarter than that."

"If you're sure," Jessica replied, in a condescending tone. I was beginning to think she wanted me to get roped into this whole situation.

"How's Josh?" I quickly asked, wanting to change the subject.

"Good," she instantly replied without looking at me. "Hey, you want to get ice cream?"

I hesitantly nodded. It seemed like she didn't want to talk about Josh. I had to know why. We both bought ice cream cones before continuing our walk on the boardwalk.

"So, just good?" I prodded. Jessica silently nodded as she licked her ice cream. I was not going to fall for her silent treatment.

"Jess, talk to me," I insisted.

She shot me an annoyed look. "I don't know, okay?"

"What don't you know?" I asked in a more gentle voice.

"I just feel like things aren't working, you know? He's been emotionally stable but we still fight. I honestly just don't think it's worth moving backwards."

"I know exactly what you mean," I replied, thinking of my breakup with Mike.

We began to walk back to her car as she continued to vent about Josh. "I think I have to break up with him," she concluded.

Is it terrible that I kind of hope she does? I want her to be happy. I also honestly just want her back in all our lives.

  1. Justin's in an awkward spot. I'm not surprised he's acting the way he is. I'm just curious to see if Alan tries to spin this thing in some way...you know maybe make it seem like Caroline came on to him to deflect attention away from what he actually did. Stranger things have happened...

Too bad for Jessica though. Sometimes you hafta give it one last go just to know it really isn't going to work. I just hope she cuts the cord and is totally done with Josh.

    1. Ah, can you imagine if Alan says Caroline made a move on him?! That would be a whole other level of douche bag.

And I agree about Jess. Sometimes you have to make a mistake to know it's a mistake, right?

      Thanks for your comment :)

  2. You put Justin in the middle of the drama. Who does he side with, his lifelong friend or a girl he just met a month or two ago? Is Caroline that naive to think that if Alan told Jackie the that he kissed some girl on the neck that that would be beneficial and lead them to work things out? Jessica is right, you don't disclose that info thinking that the couple will stay together and fix things. I think Caroline isn't sure what she saw and created a situation. She claims to have seen Alan with another woman and then 5-10 minutes later that mystery woman is no where to be seen and the boys are gambling. Maybe she mistook someone for Alan? Out of curiosity if Justin were to kiss another woman on the cheek would that constitute cheating to you? How are you so sure Alan was kissing this woman's neck? Why not take a pic to prove your story? I'm not believing Caroline.

    1. You present a good argument. Just because Caroline is telling the story doesn't mean she's necessarily right!

  3. Why does it ALWAYS seem to be that the person trying to do the right thing looks like the bad guy!? Been there. Brutal!

  4. I don't blame Justin for keeping his distance. What do you expect him to do? I think Caroline should mind her own business next time unless she's 10000% sure and has proof.

  5. I think Caroline should've just minded her own business. This has turned into a lot of drama, over what exactly? She just met Jackie. Let her figure out if Alan is a cheat or a douche canoe or what have you. NOT HER PROBLEM.

    1. Thanks for your comment! A lot of people seem to feel this isn't Caroline's problem and the bottom line is, it really isn't. It's just an overall unfortunate situation since she's probably going to be around this couple a lot if she continues to date Justin!

  6. I agree with Ashley. Caroline made this bigger than it is, screwed up everyone's weekend, except for Jackie and now has Justin who is avoiding her it seems. If it's so important that Jackie knew why not be woman enough to tell her instead of all this meaningless drama.

    1. Oh, boy. Who knows what kind of drama would have been created if Caroline told Jackie herself. I find it interesting that some commenters have said that Caroline is causing more drama this way. Glad to have this perspective!

  7. I've had some sort of a weird vibe about Justin since the beginning of his relationship with Caroline. After seeing his anger come through a bit, and now this.. I'm not sold on him! I do think Caroline is making it more of a problem for herself getting involved in a relationship she isn't 100% sure about, but I think I would want my guy to have my back no matter what. We shall see! I hope things work out for Caroline, she deserves it!

    1. I agree with you except for the part about Justin having her back. If I were in this position I'd be more inclined to believe my friend and have their back than someone I recently started dating. If Caroline and Justin were together for a while and had history together then it would be different IMO. He doesn't know her well enough to fully support her. He tried his best in Atlantic City.

    2. Gina and Jessica,

I think you both have a good point. No matter what way you look at it, Justin is in a tough spot! We'll have to see how he handles it.

  8. I think Caroline should back off and not worry so much of Alan and Jackie that's going to push Justin away thinking she wants to start drama!! Jackie will find out.. But can't wait to see what happens next

    1. I think it will depend a lot on her interactions with them. If she doesn't see them, the issue will probably dissolve.

  9. I disagree with a lot of people here and don't think she was starting "drama." I'm pretty sure everyone here would want to know if they'd been cheated on. Having been in that situation, if you find out that it went on for a long time, you end up wondering why no one said anything. And it's because everyone thinks it's "not their business." I think Caroline was just trying to do the right thing. If Justin can't acknowledge Alan's actions just because they're friends, then that's his problem.

And how do you imagine someone kissing someone else's neck anyways? Even in the highly unlikely case that that didn't actually happen, you can still see someone's body language if they're far away and if it's dark, and Alan was too close to the other girl.

    Great writing as always! :)

    2. Yes! We have to look out for each other :)

    3. How is out looking out for each other when she isn't sure what she saw? Alan was canoodling with this woman and quite cozy but 10 minutes later she's MIA. It doesn't make sense. Jackie isn't her friend, they don't know each other and Caroline getting worked up is a bit much. I thin Caroline is getting into something that doesn't concern her. If this was her friend by all means tell her but not a stranger.

    4. While I see where you're coming from, it should be noted that Jackie probably isn't going to be a stranger for long. Since things are going well with Justin, she's probably going to see more of Jackie. I still see where you're coming from, though. They just met, so a lot of people seem to think she's just playing with fire.

    5. Is she going to see a lot of Jackie? Maybe Justin will get tired of being in the middle and move on?

    6. That's a definite possibility now, but I don't think that's what she was thinking when she told Justin!

    7. I don't understand where the writing says that Caroline had shitty eyesight. Does everyone here normally imagine people kissing when they're not?

      Delete
    8. Yeah, I'm surprised so many people think she might be mistaken! I guess since it was dark and she didn't see them kiss on the lips, but I still think she is pretty certain with what she saw. Thanks for your comment :)

  10. I feel bad bad that Caroline tried to do the right thing and it kind of backfired. she would have felt worse if she didn't say anything and let Jackie think things were okay though.

  12. I'm Wednesday drinking and my comment had too many typos (I'm going on vacation tomorrrow, dont judge).

I never realized how much women would rather button out, and let others be hurt. Maybe Caroline didn't see anything, but she thought she did. She actually gives a crap about others, and told her boyfriend instead of putting her nose in a relationship she doesn't understand. Yeah, Justin's in a tough place. But I think it's sad that so many people say "they've only been together a a little while, he should believe his friend." If you want a relationship, then at some point you have to pick the girl over the friend. If you've been friends for 30 years and dating a girl for 5, would the girl still not come first?

Yo, author, I'm going to do a post on friends vs girlfriends. Do you want credit for inspiration? I can send a few people your way :)

    1. I think it would be different if Caroline and Justin were together longer. If I had to choose between an lifelong friend and a man I met a month or two ago, I'd pick my friend. If ceilings l Caroline and Justin were together for a long time then I can see him putting her first but here they only just started dating. If she thought she saw something and didn't then her interfering and making a big deal would be wrong. You don't accuse someone of cheating unless your 100% sure. Why put everyone through drama because you thought you saw something. It's not like she told Justin and dropped it. She put him in a tough spot.

    2. Alicia- No judgments on the drinking, haha! And yes, any shout outs are greatly appreciated and feel free to link it here so my readers can see it :) Maybe I can add an author's note.

I've also been surprised by the amount of people claiming Caroline's being dramatic, but I'm glad to see another side! Always interesting to hear how people interpret what I write.

Anonymous & Alicia- I know Justin's in a tough spot, but I want to simply point out that the second time Justin talked to Alan, he didn't seem to dispute the allegations anymore. Maybe I should have highlighted this in my post and I sure take the blame for that, but I don't know if Justin will feel that he has to pick a side anymore. We'll see!

  13. Alan is going to tell her that Caroline is starting a rumor and was drunk in the club telling justin that she saw him with a woman and was kissing her when he was in the casino gambling. I agree with telling but I would need to be 1000 percent sure, like walk over he seems me i see him. Its a dark club with alcohol. I dont think he could have ditched the girls and made it to the casino gambling in 10 minutes if he was making out with a girl. But thats me. I think she should have told justin what she saw and leave it there. These are his friends and relationships he should decide how to move forward. If the shoe was on the other foot she wouldnt want him butting in with her friends.

    1. You have a good point about her telling Justin but not necessarily pushing him to take action. As far as losing the girls, I just have to say from experience, things in Atlantic City can move very fast! One time I went, I kept losing my friend and every time I found her she was talking to a different guy! Also, the casino and clubs are so close. But thank you for the comment! It can be difficult to believe and I think that's part of why the situation is frustrating.
